About the artist: In 2011 Matt received an MFA at Boston University. He currently lives in Brooklyn and spends his days making art in his Bronx studio with his dog Gesso.
Matt's current body of work focuses on color and uses a unique combination of painting and building techniques to craft abstract, geometric paintings that have a strong material and sculptural presence. In 2013 printmaking muscled its way to the forefront of Matt's studio practice. The constant exchange of ideas and visual vocabulary between painting and printmaking has a wonderful synergy, where the two media help to continually redefine the nature of each other's process.
While living in Boston, Matt exhibited his work at galleries and museums, including NKG, 808 Gallery, and the Danforth Museum of Art. After finishing his MFA, Matt's paintings were featured in Alpha Gallery's annual "New Talent" exhibit recognizing Boston's best up-and-coming artists. Matt's work is represented by: 212 Gallery (Aspen), Kate Alkarni Gallery (Seattle) and Decorazon Gallery (London). New York galleries should feel free to solicit theirs services for Matt's consideration. His work has been reviewed in the Boston Globe, The Boston Art Review and the Aspen Times.
Matt Neuman:
Geometry as a structural tool comes from the shape from painting itself. It is humanity’s most basic organizing principle and it provides a highly intuitive structure for making sense of space. These large-scale woodcut prints use geometry as a delivery vehicle for color and provide a visual experience at the intersection between Cartesian and non-Euclidian space. The resulting visual experience challenges the viewers’ assumption about the nature of space and the role abstraction plays in providing a visual analog to the existence of more fundamental spatial realities.
